SGX-ASX: An odd couple

If SGX wants a merger/takeover with/of ASX, it better think about the implication for its self-regulatory role. ASX has abandoned its self-regulatory role in 2009, but SGX is still sticking to this awkward role of monitoring itself.

Will the Aussie government allow SGX to continue its self-regulatory role if the merger/takeover is completed? I doubt so. Will SGX and singapore government which has a stake in it through Temasek holdings agree to shedding of the self-regulatory role?

If shedding of the self-regulatory role is the best thing to come out of this merger/takeover, i welcome it.
